A pair of ordinary power poles that have long stood over the rolling hills of Dix Park will soon transform into enormous sunflowers. The innovative foray into ‘creative infrastructure’ comes courtesy of a collaboration between Dix Park Conservancy, Duke Energy and Raleigh-based artist Thomas Sayre.
The Conservancy has been awarded a $100,000 grant from Google to create and install WiFi-enabled benches throughout the park.
The City of Raleigh recognizes the Dorothea Dix Park site as “broad contemporary” Indigenous land, and the park has held the Inter-Tribal Pow Wow ceremony for three years, showcasing the legacy and culture of Indigenous people living in North Carolina. But Dix Park is planning to honor Native Americans in a bigger way.
The Dix Park Conservancy is seeking multi-faceted partners experienced in “grab and go environments” to operate concessions at Dix Park. The search is a ‘first step toward a menu as wonderful as the rest of the park.’
For the third year, members of North Carolina’s eight Native American tribes will gather on Dix Park’s Big Field for one of the state’s largest Inter-Tribal Pow Wows.
Built in 1923 – the Superintendent’s House, Physician’s House and Gatekeeper’s Cottage were part of the former Dorothea Dix Hospital – a landmark mental health facility for central North Carolina. Construction began in January to bring the buildings back to life.

SECU, SECU Foundation, Dix Park Conservancy and City of Raleigh Break Ground on Transformation of Historic Stone Houses
The State Employees’ Credit Union and its affiliated foundation donated $5 million to restore the long-abandoned Stone Houses in Raleigh’s Dix Park.
Many people gathered Thursday at Dix Park to celebrate plans to restore three historic stone houses near the front entrance of the campus.
